Elephants bathing in the river. Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. Sri Lanka

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, located in Sri Lanka’s Sabaragamuwa Province, is a sanctuary dedicated to the care of orphaned, injured, and abandoned elephants. Established in 1975, the orphanage is home to one of the world’s largest captive elephant herds. Visitors can observe the elephants in a natural-like environment, with popular highlights including daily feeding sessions and the elephants’ bath in the nearby river. Pinnawala also plays a vital role in breeding and conservation efforts aimed at increasing Sri Lanka’s elephant population. It offers a unique opportunity to witness these majestic creatures up close while learning about their conservation.

As of recent updates, Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is home to around 80 to 90 elephants, with the number fluctuating due to births and transfers. The herd includes a mix of adult elephants and calves, making it one of the largest captive elephant populations globally. The orphanage’s primary focus is on providing care and rehabilitation for these elephants, significantly contributing to conservation efforts in Sri Lanka.
